Heartbreaking Story of Bowie's Son's Mum

Thanks to Popbitch:
Duncan Jones, formerly Zowie Bowie, won a BAFTA at the weekend, for outstanding debut by a British director. [For 'Moon,' screening as the first 'Movies By Moonlight' offering @Blackrock Castle Observatory on Saturday night.] Alone among the luvvies, his acceptance speech was sweet and truly affecting. So imagine what it must have been like for Angie Bowie to be sent the video clip. Estranged from her 38 year-old son since he was 14, this heart-wrenching note is what she posted on her Facebook page:

"Dear Duncan, On your BAFTA win! Well done. I won't have the opportunity of saying this to you so i will write it. Bravo! Congratulations. I am so very proud of you. You are as talented as you are cute! love Mummy".

FAST FOOD PORN FOR DIET REFUSENIKS

A collection of the world's most fattening recipes have been gathered together on a website for diet refuseniks. They include the chocolate covered bacon maple doughnut bar, Burger King funnel cake fries with icing dip, and the double coronary burger (pictured below).

Fatty food fans submit their own pictures and recipes to Thisiswhyyourefat.com. The food, which includes a pint mug fashioned out of greasy fried bacon and filled with beer, is a backlash against dieting and a celebration of all things unhealthy. Photographs of the recipes, dubbed "fast food porn", have mainly been contributed by people in America. One is the 15lb Porkgasm - pork belly stuffed with bacon, sausage and minced pork, swathed in more rashers, and the whole lot formed into the shape of a pig. Its US inventor, who made the meal for a dinner party, said: "My guests were all total gluttons." But he admitted: "Most of us ended up with nightmares and stomach aches." Food industry expert Angus Kennedy said the website, which has now been turned into a book, was a backlash by consumers were fed up with being harangued about what they should eat. He said: "The more we are told a product is bad for us, the more we want it as it is fun breaking the rules."

HAIR TODAY GONE TOMORROW

LOOK AT HOW LONG THIS DUDE GREW HIS HAIR!
A man who may have had the longest hair in the world has died at his home in Vietnan.

Tran Van Hay is thought to have had hair up to 6.8 metres long, although it had never been officially measured for a record attempt. It stretched in a thick, matted cord around his body, resembling a massive furry boa constrictor. The official world record for the longest hair is held by Xie Qiuping of China, whose hair was measured in 2004 at 5.6 metres long. If Hay's hair was as long as it is claimed to be - or even as long as the 6.2 metres is was reported to have been measured at in 2006 - it would have taken the record by a considerable distance. 79-year-old Hay, who lived in the Kien Giang province of southern Vietnam, worked as a herbalist and lived a simple life, according to reports. However, his hair did cause him some difficulties, notably that he couldn't take a motorcycle taxi anywhere because he couldn't fit a helmet around his hair. He had been growing his hair for over fifty years, according to his wife Nguyen Thi Hoa, because he often felt sick after a haircut.
By day, Hay kept his hair - which weighed several kilograms - balanced precariously on his head, covered by a scarf.

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE DAY - BLAME IT ON THE WEATHERMAN

FIRST OFF CHECK OUT THE COCKROACH GUY...

NOW CHECK THIS...

Jim Kosek has become an internet star after screaming his way through a forecast on February 5 as the ‘Snowmaggeddon’ storm hit the east coast. "Oh boy, 14 to 22 inches of snow," the 45-year-old warns calmly ... but then the screaming really starts. "Our paralysing, crippling, record-breaking storm comes today," he yells. "Road closures, flight cancellations in the hundreds, power outages by the tens of thousands, maybe the hundreds of thousands? Yes." Kosek’s video on YouTube has more than a million views, making him one of the biggest stars on the video sharing website, which is celebrating its fifth birthday (yes, it’s only five) this week. The weatherman, who gives a video forecast on accuweather.com, admits it’s OK to be ‘juiced, tanked and a little under the influence’ on air. On becoming an internet star after his theatrical forecast, he said: "It just so happened that somebody somewhere knew what they were doing, tossed it up on to YouTube. "And then the thing grew legs and went at a sprinter’s pace like crazy."

REBEL RIDERS: HAVE YA SEEN THE GATOR BIKE??

When it comes to spreading the message about conserving wildlife, we’re more used to protesters chaining themselves to trees or digging tunnels in front of road-builders.
But one charity fundraiser decided instead to spread an entire alligator skin over a custom-built gas-guzzling chopper motorbike – and sell 1,000 raffle tickets at a snappy £75 each. Jim Jablon, owner of the Wildlife Rehab centre in Hernando, Florida, devised the GatorBike to raise funds for the charity, which rescues neglected or abused exotic pets. The 120mph reptilian ride features the skin and skull of an alligator culled and donated by state officials. ‘I thought, “Why not put it to good use?”’ said the 45-year-old. The skin is detachable but the head is fixed perm-anently into the handlebars and has the speedometer implanted into the back of the skull.

And the prize draw is set to be just as quirky as the toothy two-wheeler itself – with the winning ticket to be plucked from a pool full of alligators by a 22-year-old model. ‘It’s not dangerous,’ said Mr Jablon. ‘We’re not going to tie a chicken to her or anything.’

FLIPPING GREAT PANCAKES

Pancake or Shrove Tuesday marks the day before Lent begins and is celebrated throughout Europe, the US, Canada and Australia. Pancakes are an ancient food dating back to Roman Times and the history of flipping or tossing the pancake can be traced back as far as the 15th century when it appeared in cookery books. Traditionally in Ireland, people used up their supplies of fresh eggs, milk and butter to cook up a feast of pancakes before the Lenten Fast began. Eggs are a main ingredient in pancakes and they are packed with goodness, are great value for money and can be cooked in many different ways. Log on to www.eggs.ie for recipes and information about eggs.Pancakes are a great treat, they are inexpensive to make and can be served to suit every taste and as a breakfast, main course or dessert. In the US they are a main breakfast food, the Dutch like to fill their pancakes with savoury fillings as a main course and French crepes make a delicious dessert served with a variety of sweet sauces. The traditional Irish pancake is served with butter, lemon juice and sugar or honey. They can also be served with maple syrup, fresh fruit, yogurt and literally hundreds of different sweet and savoury fillings.

Pancake Recipe
Ingredients
100g plain flour
Pinch of salt
1 egg
300 ml milk
1 tablsp. melted butter or sunflower oil
Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the egg into the well, add the melted butter or oil and half the milk. Gradually draw the flour into the liquid by stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until all the flour has been incorporated, then beat well to make a smooth batter. Stir in the remaining milk. Alternatively, beat all the ingredients together for 1 minute in a blender or food processor. Leave to stand for about 30 minutes, stir again before using.

To make the pancakes, heat a small heavy-based frying until very hot and then turn the heat down to medium. Lightly grease with oil and then ladle in enough batter to coat the base of the pan thinly (about 2 tablsp.), tilting the pan so the mixture spreads evenly. Cook over a moderate heat for 1-2 minutes or until the batter looks dry on the top and begins to brown at the edges. Flip the pancake over with a palette knife or fish slice and cook the second side. Turn onto a plate, smear with a little butter, sprinkle of sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice – enjoy! To serve: Add Butter, Caster sugar, Lemon juice to suit your taste.

Warm Pancakes with Berries and Maple Syrup
Serves 4
Makes 8 pancakes approx.
Pancakes
150g (6 oz) plain flour
1 teasp. baking powder
1 tablesp sugar
2 eggs
1 tablesp. Greek style yoghurt
Butter for cooking
To Cook
Place the flour, baking powder and sugar in the food processor. Whiz to mix well. Add the eggs, yoghurt and enough milk to make a thick, but not too thick batter. Heat a knob of butter on a non-stick pan. Take spoonfuls of the batter and cook on the hot pan for 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Keep warm. Serve with berries sprinkled with caster sugar or any other fruit, and maple syrup. A spoonful of Greek style yoghurt would also be very good.

AND AS SUGGESTED BY DEBBIE RED PATROLLER (GOOD SUGGESTION DEBS)
Banana Sour Cream Pancakes: Ingredients
* 1 1/2 cups flour
* 3 tablespoons sugar
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
* 1/2 cup sour cream
* 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
* 2 extra-large eggs
* 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
* 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
* Unsalted butter
* 2 ripe bananas, diced, plus extra for serving
* Pure maple syrup

Directions
Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, milk, eggs, vanilla, and lemon zest. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones, mixing only until combined.
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat until it bubbles. Ladle the pancake batter into the pan to make 3 or 4 pancakes. Distribute a rounded tablespoon of bananas on each pancake. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until bubbles appear on top and the underside is nicely browned. Flip the pancakes and then cook for another minute until browned. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel, add more butter to the pan, and continue cooking pancakes until all the batter is used. Serve with sliced bananas, butter and maple syrup.

& ON THE THIRD DAY THE LORD SAY MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU...

An email prankster tricked the host of a Christian TV show into reading out the plots of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Star Wars in the belief they were stories of personal salvation

The unsuspecting host read out most of the opening rap to The Fresh Prince, a 1990s US sitcom starring Will Smith, apparently unaware that it was not a genuine testimony of faith. The prankster had slightly adapted the lyrics but the references to a misspent youth playing basketball in West Philadelphia would have been instantly familiar to most viewers. The lines read out by the DJ included: "One day a couple of guys who were up to no good starting making trouble in my living area. I ended up getting into a fight, which terrified my mother." The presenter on Genesis TV, a British Christian channel, eventually realised that he was being pranked and cut the story short – only to move on to another spoof email based on the plot of the Star Wars films. It began: "My inspiration in life is a man I met in Nigeria called Ben Kenobi. He taught be so much about the Force that spirituality has; it can be used for good and it can be used for bad." After stumbling over references to Midi-chlorians, microscopic life forms found in the Star Wars universe, the presenter takes objection to Mr Kenobi's advice that we must try to live in harmony with the dark forces of the universe. "I don't think that is biblical," he says. "It doesn't sound right." A clip showing the presenter reading the two emails has been viewed more than 440,000 time since being uploaded onto YouTube last month. The prankster has posted dozens of other videos of prank calls and emails he has made to Christian television stations. Genesis TV, which is available over Sky and Freesat, launched in 2003.

GET THIS! HOIST FOR HAITI

Hoisting for Haiti – Fermoy’s Response

This coming Valentines weekend (February 12th-14th) the town of Fermoy and its surrounding area will witness a unique and challenging charity event in the centre of the town. On the Friday evening local man Conor O’Kane, who travelled as a volunteer to Haiti in October last year, will be hoisted over the town’s square. Housed in a purposely-built Perspex box Conor will fast and remain hoisted for close to 48 hours before coming back down to earth (literally) on Sunday afternoon. Reflecting on his brief trip to Haiti, Conor explained that “it was a truly life changing experience” and he “was particularly touched by the friendliness and pride of the local Haitians despite the unbelievable poverty they lived in”. Furthermore, he added that “what was most disturbing was the fact that the people had so little before the earthquake, it is hard to understand where they will get the will or resources to begin the recovery”. All proceeds from the event will go to the Haven Partnership Foundation. Haven, who Conor travelled with in October, are presently involved in the earthquake emergency relief project. However, after meeting with the Haitian president Rene Preval recently, Haven founder Leslie Buckley crucially announced that “Haven will construct up to 10,000 houses in the rebuilding of Haiti. With more than 1.5 million people estimated to be now homeless, the people of Haiti will need our assistance in providing permanent shelter more than ever”.
The intention of the “Hoisting for Haiti” project is to send local skilled tradesmen on the October 2010 house-building mission with Conor commenting “it costs €4000 to send a tradesman to Haiti, we hope to raise sufficient funds to send five local people in October, thus beginning what I hope will be lasting relationship between the townland of Fermoy and the people of Haiti”.
Donations can be lodged with the following bank details: AIB Acc: Hoisted for Haiti

Irish Heart Foundation Marathon Challenge 2010

What is the Marathon Challenge all about?
Well, it basically came about late last year when myself and my brother were having a conversation about running a marathon. I went to Pat Reynolds at K2ny, a personal trainer, and suggested that we would like him to do up a training plan for a marathon. Also we were willing to find other volunteers to join us and raise money for the Irish Heart Foundation. So, we ended up with 5 volunteers - myself (Brian Murphy), Shane Murphy, Avril Vickery, Jennifer Prout and Joanne O Donovan. Pat then suggested that we set ourselves a real challenge and do a number of marathons throughout the year. We are now set to run over 100 miles for our charity. It all begins in Graughwell, Galway with a 10 mile road race on March 14. Then we go to Bantry on May 2nd for the Bantry Bay Run, which is a half marathon (13.1 miles). Then comes the first of our full marathons in Cork on June 7. Next stop is Dingle on Ssptember 4 for another 26.2 miles. We then hope to travel to New York in November to compete inthe marathon there. This totals 101.7 miles. All this is in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation and we will be holding a number of fundraising events over the year, so stay tuned..

GERMAN TOURIST LOST ON ICE SAVED BY WEBCAM SPOTTER

A tourist lost in the dark on a frozen sea in northern Germany has been rescued after flashes from his camera were spotted on a beach webcam. The man, who has not been named, had become lost after walking onto ice off St Peter-Ording to photograph a sunset, police in the North Sea area said. A woman watching the sunset via webcam hundreds of kilometres away in southern Germany noticed the flashes. She alerted police who were able to guide the man to safety. The photographer, a German tourist in his 40s, could have frozen to death or fallen through the ice, police said. "He got lost on the ice and could not find the coast again because it was covered in snow," spokeswoman Kristin Stielow told reporters. Ms Stielow said local people were well aware of the risk of disorientation as darkness fell and the beach became hard to locate but vivid sunsets over frozen landscapes often drew people away from the shore. St Peter-Ording is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and sailing, and the local tourism board runs a website with webcams.

CLASSIC! BANKER RED-FACED CAUGHT SCANNING BLUE PIX

An Australian banker is in trouble after being filmed looking at racy photos of a top model while a colleague was doing a TV interview.

He could be seen clicking on photos of Miranda Kerr in the background of a Channel 7 interview with an analyst for Macquarie Private Wealth. The near nude images of the Australian model, girlfriend of Hollywood star Orlando Bloom, were from a recent GQ Magazine shoot. The footage soon made its way on to YouTube and became a huge hit, reports the BBC. Macquarie Private Wealth was not amused and said it was taking the matter very seriously. The images of Ms Kerr could clearly be seen during the Channel 7 interview, only at the end of which does the banker turn to the camera and realise he has been filmed. A Macquarie statement said: "Macquarie has strict policies in place surrounding the use of technology and the issue arising from the live cross on Seven News is being dealt with internally." The banker in question, said to be a mid-level client investment manager, has reportedly been meeting executives to determine his future.

MORE ON MARK 'CHOPPER' READ...

HOW SCARY IS THIS??

CHOPPER WITH HECTOR...

SCROLL FURTHER DOWN TO OZZIE DAY POSTS OF LAST WEEK FOR MORE ON CHOPPER...

HERE'S HIS ART IT'S NOT BLOODY BAD IS IT??
FORMER underworld standover man Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read may have long given up a life of shooting, stabbing and torturing. But for better or worse, the man who spent 23 years in prison for violent crime is now making a killing in the art market — and yes, he's in it for the money. In four years as a painter, Read has sold more than 126 works for up to $6500 each. His fourth exhibition opened last night at Michael Boyd Gallery in Collingwood, his old stamping ground as a wayward youth. Read's new reputation was sealed in 2003 at his first exhibition at Fitzroy gallery, Dante's. Fans, the voyeuristic and collectors, looking for good resale value, snapped up all 45 pieces. The State Library of Victoria purchased a Read self-portrait for $1400. Sydney artist Adam Cullen, now a close friend of Read, inspired the former hitman when he sat for Cullen's entry in the 2002 Archibald Prize. "I saw his stuff on the wall, and I said to him, 'how much do you charge for this?' " Read recalls. "He said 'I've just sold two to Elton John for $25,000 each.' I thought to myself , 'how long's this shit been going on?', so I got hold of some acrylic paints and a brush and took it up." He is keen to emphasise that there's no subtext though. "Adam Cullen described it as post-modernist, neo-surrealist rubbish. It looks good up on walls, goes up in price, and fits good into the back of a BMW." Then Read starts talking about Ned Kelly, whose armoured image appears in six of his 21 works. A psychiatrist would have a field day. There's the work Kelly Never Died, where four 'Neds', their bodies painted like Read's many tattoos, stand side by side, wielding machine-guns or with hooks for hands. In The Big Silver Chicken That Ate Ned's Arm, Kelly, wearing a football jumper and with an amputated arm, stands forlornly in an abstract countryside, overshadowed by a silver cartoon bird. When pressed for an analysis, Read sighs, "I think there were so many lies told about Ned Kelly, another lie wouldn't hurt." Several works depict Kelly as a woman, naked with enormous breasts and legs splayed. In fact, the exhibition has a lot of naked women with enormous breasts, but some of them wield machine-guns. Like Read, Kelly was a violent criminal in his youth and later became a kind of national character. They even both spent time in Pentridge Prison, albeit a century apart. Read is sick of the Kelly comparisons but is ambivalent, one minute dismissing Kelly as "an over-rated, overblown bloody poofter", the next saying he's a "great australian national hero".

MOTHER NATURE GOES X-FILES

YouTube vids: Amazing UFO clouds spark hopes of extra-terrestrial life
You may think it’s blue-sky thinking gone wrong, but some space-lovers believe a recent spate of UFO-shaped clouds point to the existence of alien life.

The eerie illuminated discs in the sky have been popping up all around the world, with spectacular sightings in Moscow, Romania, Florida and even Ireland. Mother Nature it seems, has gone all X-Files on us. Theories about what they are include intergalactic overlords hovering above earth in their big motherships, top-secret military experiments – or that they are just some big round clouds. Meterologist Karsten Brandt believes the footage and photos ‘are not fakes, but explainable natural phenomenon’. He believes that the Moscow photos were probably two layers of cloud lying on top of one another, with the upper cloud illuminated.
Some environmentalists blamed pollution for the cloud, but weathermen were quick to reject the idea. ‘The phenomenon has nothing to do with industrial emissions,’ said one. ‘They could not produce such an effect against the background of the current weather conditions.’ If the phenomena did turn out to be spacecraft, we suspect the world’s ufologists would be on cloud nine.

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE DAY - KISSING CHICKENS ON SUBWAY NYC

Man kisses chicken on NY subway, derided for fowl behaviour...boom boom!
A hen-pecked man kissed and cuddled a chicken on the floor of a New York subway carriage, ruffling the feathers of his fellow passengers.

Commuters on the uptown No.6 train scatter as the unnamed man rolls around on the floor of the carriage with the chicken. It’s not surprising that no one egged on the man’s antics, as only service animals and those in containers are allowed in the Big Apple’s subway system. Of course, the plucky character’s tomfoolery could all be a prank. After all, he was filmed doing it…
